Environmental Impact
Mining by its very nature has an impact on the environment. In line with its policy on sustainable development, Eastplats strives to ensure compliance with environmental legislation.
Water Managment
Independent consultants have completed significant work around the following key issues:
- Design of an optimal water balance to promote efficient use of the water and to prevent unnecessary discharges to the environment;
- Review and refine water treatment requirements to ensure that all discharges to the environment comply with the pollution control standards;
- Review and refine surface water management systems to divert clean water around the mine operations and to capture dirty water in dedicated systems;
- Review and refine the tailings dam design to extend its life, promote stability and promote optimal environmental performance;
- Review and refine the ground water model to more accurately predict impacts associated with the mine's operations and to facilitate the implementation of appropriate remedial measures; and
- Review and refine ground and surface water monitoring programmes in accordance with the findings of the revised ground water model.
Pollution Control
Efforts aimed at improving pollution control at CRM has been focused on dust control at the tailings dam, effluent control at the sewage treatment works, and water monitoring both on and off site. CRM has introduced a dust monitoring network and a system for monitoring and rectifying diffuse pollution of soils.
